Attack in volleyball is when a player attacks the ball towards the opposing team’s side of the court. There are six types of spike attack techniques: open, quick attack, quick open, stack play, movement (flare), Back Row Attack Hit (back attack).

1. quick attack

A quick attack in volleyball means that the attacker attempts a spike before the setter’s toss ball reaches its maximum height. That’s how you try to attack in order to take away the opponent’s blocking timing. quick attacks are largely divided into three categories depending on the distance between the setter and the attacker .
Quick attacks are divided into A, B, and C depending on the distance between the setter and the striker, and are sometimes called A quick, B quick, and C quick. When the distance between the setter and the attacker is less than 1m, it is called A quick attack. In general, middle blockers (centers) tend to participate in attack a lot.

quick attack A that doesn’t give you time to block. the most common A-quick attack.

The speed is incredible, right? When you watch volleyball, you relieve your stress when you make a quick attack.
Quick attack is an attack that make people excited. It looks easy, but the harmony between the setter and the striker is more important than anything else. The setter has to predict the speed and direction of tossing the ball, and the striker has to predict in advance where the ball will come up!

Then, what is B fast attack?
It refers to a toss connected to attack within a distance of 1 to 3 meters between the setter and the striker. The most difficult C quick attack crosses the distance from the end of the court to the end and toss. It’s over 3m? It is also said that C quick attack is a quick open.

quick attack C – You’re not ready to block and you’re attacked.

2. Stack Play

The purpose of taking away the opponent’s blocking timing is similar to the quick attack, but there is a difference in the method.
The stack play is to increase the attack success rate by neutralizing the opponent’s blocking through fake movements. That’s why it’s very important to be in harmony between the bait player who deceives the opposing team and the player who actually participates in the attack. The most important thing about a stack play is to take away the blocking timing of the opposing team. This is because it is only possible to block in the air for a limited short period. Of course, the harmony between the two players who try to attack is very important.

Bait player’s acting skills are important.

3. Open Attack

Open attack is a “honest” attack method that relies entirely on the power of the striker.
It is also the most common attack which is failed by blocking because opponent easily know when and where they block.

open attack with a straight punch

4. Flare Attack

It’s an attack where you jump diagonally.
The name was given because the attacker’s jumping up looks like a flame spreading sideways. It is said that It has nothing to do with jumping. It’s an attack that spikes with your wrist and power. But I think you need to have jumping ability.

jump diagonally

5. Back Row Attack Hit

It is a method of jumping behind a white line in the middle called an attack line and then attacking.
The back attack is mainly played by the right position. The reason is that due to the nature of the formation, the right must be located behind the setter.
The setter is blocking the opponent’s view, so it is possible to attack more secretly.

suddenly appears from behind and attacks

Due to the nature of volleyball, which repeats jumping and landing on a solid floor, knee injuries are reported to occur the most in volleyball players. Patella tendinitis of the knee bone tendon, which connects the patella and the bony bone and transmits the knee extensor of the femoral muscle, is a typical example.
It often occurs in athletes who jump and land so much that it is called the jumper’s knee. It appears a lot in heavy athletes, and interestingly, it occurs well in athletes with good jumping skills.

How to Prevent Knee Injury >>
To prevent knee injuries, it is recommended to wear cushioned shoes and avoid excessive jumping practices during training. It is also important to strengthen quadriceps femoris to lose weight and reduce stress on the tendon of the knee bone.

It strengthens the peroneal muscle outside the ankle so that the feet can resist the internal reaction force that bends inward. Before a game or training session, tape the left and right ankles to reduce the incidence of ankle sprain. In the event of acute ankle sprain, it is recommended to immediately prevent further damage through icing and splint fixation, and to restore the function of the ligaments through external ligament suture if progressed to chronic instability.

You can be exposed to shoulder injuries in strong hitting of the ball or stretching your arms while diving. In particular, volleyball players are at high risk of rotator cuff damage and biceps damage due to repeated shoulder use for a long time. In particular, it is reported that about 30% of volleyball players experience atrophy of the lower part of the rotator cuff of the shoulder due to repeated arm swings. As a result, the extra-shoulder rotational muscle strength weakens and the balance of the muscles around the shoulder collapses, causing Sick scapula syndrome.
In addition, continuous micro-damage of rotator cuffs can cause acute partial rupture and chronic tendon inflammation, causing performance degradation.

In typical, indoor Volleyball, there are 6 players on court at one time. More often than not there are 2 or 3 individuals sitting on the seat (more in the event that it is an expert amusement) who are pivoted in as needed. The positions are numbered 1 through to 6. Position 1 is spotted in the back right hand corner of the court. Position 2 is the right hand side outside hitter. Position 3 is the center hitter in the front column. Position 4 is the outside hitter on the left hand side. Position 5 is the left hand player at the back of the court and position 6 is the center back line player.

Positions 2, 3 and 4 are known as front column players, and position 5, 6 and 1 are known as back line players. The back line safeguards the ball as this is the place most spikes and serves area and the front players do the assaulting. In most abnormal state diversions of Volleyball the setter plays in position 1, which is known as a back column setter. In the event that the group has a libero, they will typically take position 6. The libero is the player that does a large portion of the passing, and is permitted to swap with the player from number 6 when it is that group’s chance to get a serve.

image from volleyballadvisors.com

You pivot clockwise when playing Volleyball, and just front hitters can bounce and hit the ball before the forefront. Back column hitters are permitted to spike as well, yet just in the event that they bounce from behind the front line. The two outside hitters on front column typically get high balls from the setter and after that hit the ball down. The center front column hitter normally gets littler sets, implying that the hits are quicker. Volleyball Positions are not that entangled, however it does take a bit of getting used to!

Volleyball drills comprise predominantly of different approaches to hit a ball. The exemplary recipe of pass, set, spike is the principle subject of these drills. Volleyball has a ton more artfulness than simply knowing HOW to hit the ball effectively. Knowing when to hit it, where to hit it, and where to be to hit it effectively are presumably the most critical principal abilities that all players must have. Conceiving volleyball penetrates that will help ingrain these truths into your players’ psyche is the fate of most extreme criticalness.

At the point when taking a gander at the configuration of reasonable volleyball drills, it is key to get your group to comprehend the contrast between their rotational positions and their playing positions. After each one volley, the group all pivots one position clockwise. This gives each one colleague a few opportunities to play at every rotational position, including server. It is imperative for your players to know where they are playing in the turn, as that is the spot they need to come back to after each one play. After the group pivots, this is the position that the players will remain at until the ball is served. Having your players diffuse on the court, then rapidly come back to their positions is one of the essential volleyball bores that will help ingrain this into your players.

After the ball is served, the players will then change to their played positions. Volleyball penetrates that push the significance of being portable are the way to getting these developments down. As you mentor your group, you will perpetually discover a couple of players that are preferable at setting over the rest, while you will discover solid spikers and passers from different players. Clearly you need your strongest players with every skillset to play into their separate qualities. You may find that your strongest setters have been pivoted to an outside blocker position. Since you need those players to have the capacity to rapidly get to the focal point of the court, you can run volleyball bores that will instruct the players how to rapidly move from any position in the pivot to their particular played positions. This will help your colleagues know how to get to their played positions rapidly.

One for the best volleyball penetrates that will chip away at player position control would include experiencing he standard turn, then holding it for a bit while sitting tight for the ball to be served. You can begin genuinely little and have a solitary player gone through all positions in a revolution, then rushing to be in position to cover their played positions, then rapidly coming back to their pivot place. As your colleagues get to be more positive about their developments, you can start to have a greater amount of your group join in on these volleyball drills until you have your entire group in on the turns. As of right now, you can even begin tossing the ball once again the net to recreate a genuine play set in a genuine diversion.

Every player on your group needs to buckle down on your volleyball drills while you are demonstrating to them industry standards to play their rotational and played positions. This will help keep their brain concentrated on where they ought to be at virtually any given minute in the diversion. The reason for all volleyball drills si to impart a feeling of programmed development in your players. The same holds valid in these development drills. You need your group to have the capacity to move and cover both of their two concurrent positions immediately. The less your players need to ponder these things, the smoother their play will get to be.

Volleyball, the second most popular sport after soccer in the world has evolved within the last few decades. The major objective of the players of teams on either side of the net is to score at least 25 points. There are six basic volleyball skills which are necessary to know and absorb as a volleyball player. Time, target and focus are the major ingredients which help in making an efficient player. Before getting accustomed to the volleyball skills, make sure you are well aware of the rules which are required to be followed within the volleyball court. The six major skills in volleyball include serving, digging, setting, blocking, spiking, and passing.

Serving Skills:

To ignite the volleyball court with fire and upsurge with a quick momentum of energy, serving is one of the best volleyball skills which can put a weaker opponent at a great disadvantage. Underhand serve is the easiest to execute which keeps the ball in motion. Do not make contact with the end line while serving. You can both, serve the ball with open or cupped hand, and always maintain the firmness of your wrist. Always keep your eyes steady on the movement of the ball. Serving types includes:

Floater: In this, the ball is punched with a fist and does not spin, rather darts as a knuckleball in baseball.

Top spin: The ball is thrown above, and then swiftly passed over the net to reach the opponent’s side. In order to create a spin, make sure to give your wrist a quick snap.

Jump serve: The jump serve skills in volleyball require tossing the ball high above, and jumping a little to hit the ball. This is the hardest volleyball serve, and may end up out of the bounds if there isn’t sufficient top spin.

Digging Skills:

Digging are defensive skills in volleyball where the knees are required to be bent. The weight of the player should be exerted more towards the front so that he/she can easily dive to the floor in order to retrieve the volleyball. To become an expert in digging volleyball skills, timely execution, great foot work, rolling and diving are few of the key things. The player must have a lower position with the knees positioned over the toes and forwardly placed. Keep your right foot forward. The weight of the body is required to be equally concentrated on both the balls of feet. Always keep the feet at a shoulder length distance with your arms bent a little before the knees. Keep a keen eye on the movement of the hitter and react only after studying them. While diving on the floor to obtain the ball, make sure you fall on your abdominal and not on your knees or elbows.

Setting Skills:

Setting is an important ingredient to spice up the game and the setters are more often responsible for almost all the contacts, made by the team with the ball. The setter generally decides on which hitter to set. Many teams keep two setters as they are the one who receives a bumpy pass and make it manageable enough to be hit by his/her other team mates. Setting is one of those volleyball skills which have a strong hand in deciding on the team’s fate. Setting involves keeping the elbows and knees bent and focus on your target always. Make sure that your both hands are engaged in handling the ball. Avoid violations by preventing the ball from touching your palm which is known as push. You will be alarmed by the referee if your hands are not kept above your face. This skill in volleyball requires the setter to hold the ball for at least 3 seconds.

Blocking Skills:

Blocking is one of those volleyball skills which tends to cripple the hitter’s spike, making the opponent weak. The blocker is generally near the net and stays in motions with hands place higher up. Keeping target on the ball is of utmost importance and the player jumps vertically to obtain maximum height while hitting the ball above the net. A typical blocker will have his/her arms raised above the head, both the hands in contact with fingers open, hips almost parallel to the net, flexed knees and wrists in square with the arms. While landing, it is important for a blocker to maintain proper inertia and keep balance. Swinging arms are considered as a major fault on the player’s side so it must be prevented. The blocker should have excellent perseverance power and be able to anticipate where the ball will be hit and therefore react accordingly. It is important for a blocker to touch almost every pass.

Spiking Skills:

When the team has a good number of players who can spike well, undoubtedly your team has a better chance to win the match. Spiking volleyball skills are majorly attacking techniques where timing is very significant. Keep yourself at an angle with the ball to execute a proper spike. This skill is a four step technique for the right hand players: Right, Left, Right and Left; whereas for the left hand players, it is a three step technique: Left, Right and Left. To exert more strength on your spike, always face cross court. The player requires his/her legs to be angled at 90 degrees for an excellent jump. Give your jump the guidance of both of your arms for a smoother ride. Broad jumping is big no-no in spiking technique. You will be at a disadvantage if your contact with ball is too low or your jump to approach the ball is too late.

Passing Skills:

Passing skills in volleyball are usually the least identified, but a highly critical ingredient in this sport. While passing volleyball skills keep the feet placed widely apart from one another, with one foot placed a bit forward. Keep your shoulder lowered and knees bent for a better pass. Keep your eyes in search of the ball till it makes contact with your hand. Keep your arms straight and keep your hips open in the direction of the approaching ball. The players must not handle the ball in “shank” orientation. Do not keep the ball too close to your body while passing. Poor footwork often renders to a poorer pass. Always make sure that the floor on which you are playing is even. For passing you can either have a wrapped fist or cupped palms to pass the ball. Choosing either of the two hand volleyball position depends totally on the players’ choice and comfort.

Sometimes, having a mindset for individual fame might not work best in a game like volleyball, at some point or the other, a player has to want to play for the other players, the coach and the team. When motivation is hard to find, you might just want to take a look around for what famous personalities have to say about this game, and how it light up their spirit to aspire for greatness, not just for themselves, but for their team as well. Here are a few volleyball quotes to inspire you and make you go that extra mile for the team your playing for:

Objective of Drill:
Volleyball drills for beginners hardly serve and remain at the baseline so this drill is functional while serving and moving towards the court to attain additional practice on any particular play decided by the coach.

Drill Description:
This is one of those volleyball serving drills where the player serves and moves swiftly into defense or blocks position to play efficiently. On the basis of the skill of the player, and also his/her position and area required for improvement, the coach must decide on what movement is to be rehearsed after the serve.

The number of opportunities available for the player is as follows:

Running towards the net in order to block the ball

Running towards the net and simultaneously defend a higher ball

Running to the court to fight a ball played between two

Objective of Drill:
Players learn and develop a stable deep serve that hits on the last 3 feet of the volleyball court and makes the passer push backward.

A great serve is when the server is playing while the wind is moving at the back as the ball has to cover a wide distance high up to the wind after the pass which makes it difficult for the setter of the opposite team.

Drill Description:
Players practice this volleyball serving drill after drawing a 3 feet line from the base mark. The players must serve for numerous times to understand the appropriate angle and distance before splitting up every serve with a run towards the court.

In order to cover the serve, let the player move under the ball before contact to develop a greater angle of trajectory. In order to make the deep serve effective, let it travel above the passers to force them towards the back because low flat serves can be executed without having the opposition retreating.

Initially the server must concentrate on the distance and trajectory before pondering over the line of the serve.

After the player wins over the distance and trajectory, the athlete might consider serving the deep middle ball-wind to bewilder the passers.

Objective of Drill:
For servers, the goal is to create passes off the net. For the passers, the main objective is to pass the ball forward steadily to an idealistic location off the net.

Drill Description:
Two lines are to be drawn across the net that determines the location for an ideal pass. Passers score a point when the pass is set in between two setting lines. Serves will score when they are able to create a pass 10 feet off the line. A pass off the net can be attained in several manners but some of the ways are to serve deep, serve the ball in topspin or serve hard.

Volleyball Passing Drills

Passing is one of the most important volleyball drills in Beach Volleyball because it makes the game more interesting for the team at the receiving end. The aim is to pass the ball so that it can be hit easily by your team mates. The difference in passing between beach and indoor volleyball is that the ball is not passing to 2 ½ in beach volleyball. In this, the pass should be made to such a position which is in relation to where it was made. In beach volleyball wind will intervene more often than in indoors. Talking to your partner while the game is on helps in the passing skill.

Drill Description:
Players initiate at the net with one within the court and the other outside. They can toss the ball to and fro from one player to another while shuffling down the sideline towards the service line then along the line of service and again back to the sideline.

Objective of Drill:
It permits the players to repeat serving, setting, passing and spiking. The aim can be concentrated on any one of these four skills.

Drill Description:
A Coach will serve the ball from the baseline to the receivers in an alternate manner.

The position of the serve taking place will depend on the technical skill of the player and the aims of this drill.

After passing, the player will attack who is soon replaced by another athlete. The new attacker goes to the original position to pass and attack.

Other athletes can be incorporated at either serving or receiving ends.

Due to an uneven number of players on the receiving lines, they get to practice passing from both ends of the court.

Volleyball Setting Drills

Best volleyball setting drills can be executed when your partner is comfortable to strike the ball. The ball is easier to strike when the set can be predicted right away and has a persistent trajectory. It is the duty of the setter on the beach to help his/her playing partner by announcing the area of the beach volleyball court. You must keep a check on the wind direction as you approach towards the ball to understand the movement of the ball. It is important for the player to practice more so that he/she can win over this skill. While setting, a lower body posture is much more appropriate as it provides more scope for last moment adjustments.

Drill Description:
Two pairs of players face one another with the net in between. Player 1 approaches to set the ball across the net to the player on the other side. After setting, the players move behind their respective partners who are just by their side and down the net. Similar phenomena take place on the other end of the court and the athletes move towards another antenna, down the net. Once the players arrive on the other end, they try to turn the drill and head back without the ball touching the ground.

Volleyball Hitting Drills

Spiking in the sand is quite different from doing the same indoors. The sand tends to consumes a greater portion the strength directed by the player towards the ball and eventually that restricts the player’s ability to take high jumps. It is appropriate for the player to jump as quickly as possible in the sand and not just hang in the midst of air. In indoor volleyball, attacking requires a lot of strength whereas in the sand, technical superiority over this game dominates over the strength of the individuals. However in both the forms, power is important for hitting the ball.

Objective of Drill:
The objective of this type of volleyball hitting drills is to reinforce the right kind of angularity while attacking. This drill also helps the player to learn better arm and hand movements for spike. Spike action can be best learnt through the practice of this drill especially for the beginners.

Drill Description:
It is the coach or some other player who tosses the ball high up in the air which helps the athlete to hit it. Player approaches the ball and uses the non-active arm in order to find the ball before positioning the arm (the one hitting) through, in order to spike. If the player brings the non-hitting arm below then keeping the other arm up might turn out to be beneficial. This will allow them to knuckle every other ball across the net. If the player spikes but with the wrong foot forward, then keep both of your legs shuffling so that the right framework is achieved. For the players with a shorter height, try to keep the net at a lower height or set the ball farther away from the net.

Objective of Drill:
This is one of the effective drills in volleyball aimed at developing the right angle for approach towards the ball and also helps the player to develop better arm and hand movements.

DRILL DESCRITION

The player faces towards the spike approach. For a right handed player on the left side, this would be slightly tilted and would be certainly quite straight for a right handed player present on the right side. The opposite of this is applicable to players who are left handed. The player now tosses the ball up and a plays a soft shot with their arms swinging slightly. They stay stationed on the ground while hitting. They hit the ball to any player within the area demarcated by the coach. The player will complete repetitions whose number is dependent on the aim of the training and which shots should be made more accurate by the players. Players must learn to play soft shots from either sides of the court. It is highly advised for players to play a hard attack in between the soft ones in order to give your arm more strength.
If you can master this drill, then you can rest assure the crowd will cheer you on every time you score.

Volleyball Blocking Drills

Volleyball blocking in the beach and indoors are completely different. In beach volleyball there are only two players blocking whereas in the indoor, there are six players. The conventional way of giving off signs of blocking involves holding your hands at the back with the left hand or right hand showing the blocking style. The blocker must have good interactions with the defender in order to plan their area they want to focus on. Generally the blocker will signal to take out a line by one finger or an angle by two fingers. Now the defender becomes responsible to position oneself in a subtle manner so that he can attack the ball rightfully.

The player must widen the distance between his/her hands acquiring as much space as possible. His/her thumbs must direct in an upward motion and must be placed close enough while focusing on the blocking movement. The volleyball blocking drills require the player to maintain the firmness of his/her hands. The player must push the arms towards the front and lock them around shoulders when the ball comes in contact with the arms.

The blockers must start off by attacking a line and then move to an angle and block from there on. Blockers may start by moving parallel to the net. They can also move in sideways.

Hard at the face

Either side

Hard to the body

Drill Description:
The players blocking line up with the attacker present on the other side of the net. A player at the net throws the ball towards the net, either close or at a distance for an attacker approaching. The blocker has to understand the set and take the decision of either blocking or dropping off. The attacking player then throws the ball towards the retreating player. Another defender could be made present at the backcourt for digging. To help the attacker understand the movement of the blocker; this volleyball drill is very useful.

We are all familiar with the game volleyball, and some of us like to enjoy this sport a lot. This very game was invented in USA by a person named William Morgan; he wanted to create a game which is a mixture of basketball, baseball, handball and tennis. And this instructor of young men’s Christian association (YMCA) created this game in 1895, and was brought to international support in 1916 by Philippine’s players. By the year 1928m volleyball rules and regulations were then made, which also formed the united states volleyball association (USVBA) and teams at different age groups were formed; and was finally known to world at the Tokyo Olympics in 1964.

Let’s look into some of the Volleyball Rules and Regulations –

On request of the captain before match to the first referee, team can play without shoes. But only depending upon the type of court the request is made, and moreover this decision always stays with the referee on how the game will be played.

Uniform should be all the same, all neat and clean of a particular team. Only the libero (a defensive player) can wear uniform of bright color. And no jewelry is allowed whilst playing, except those which are soft and couldn’t harm others, the religious and medical bands are allowed. Rings, chain any kind of hard stuff is not allowed to wear. The referee do check uniform’s sometime before play.

One of the many volleyball rules is that only the playing captain or the referee can do substitution when the ball is not in play, and captain is only allowed to talk to referee. And the records for substitution are kept with the second referee, under that person’s supervision the substitution is made by any team.

Points are scored while – after – a long play – or during service. If the opponent team fails, or an error occurs, in that case points are earned or vice versa as mentioned under rules for volleyball. Team with 25 points first with a minimum lead of 25 points wins the match or play continues until a two point lead is achieved. A total of five sets are played of 25 points to win each set. Deciding or winning set (3rdor 5th) set is played for 15 points. In case of failing to play a match after referees call. The opponent team is scored 25-0 or 15-0 – depending upon the set to be played. If both the teams are at 24-24 each then the referee keeps game on until a side gets a two point lead. And after that, the team leading the score is the winner of that set.

The coin is tossed at the beginning of the game; toss winner chooses a side of court or the serving opportunity at first. Same happens when a coin is tossed for the deciding match. After each set, every team changes their side, and this repeats after every set.

At least two minutes before, the team lineup is submitted by the coach or the captain. But some before 30 seconds of the starting of the interval. After the game has started, no changes in the team list are allowed. Every detail must be submitted at the very beginning which is clearly listed under the rules and regulations of volleyball.

When the server serves the ball, each team member should be on their side with 2 rows, 3 players in each row. One player must be close to center line and two players must be close to the back line, and two players should be at left and right side line of their part of court. When the opponent gets the serve same rotation should be done in clockwise direction. Reverse clockwise direction play will be considered as foul play and is liable for a warning by the referee if needed.

While substituting a player on referees call, after the coach or captains request, details of players going inside and the one coming outside are noted which is clearly enlisted under rules of volleyball. The libero when used, cannot serve a ball, or block or hit. Also is not allowed to replace with back players unless there’s an injury, or at the call of referee. A libero must wear bright colored Jersey as similar to that of his/her team mates are wearing. They are always restricted as a back playing member of that team for that match, and are not allowed to set any team mate for hit attack if the libero is in front of the 3 meter line. But when the libero is outside the 3 meter line, then a team mate is allowed to take the hit shot. It’s substitution doesn’t require authorization from the referee and can enter between the end line and the 3 meter line. It is not counted as regular substitution and can have unlimited entries.

A ball is in play only when it is legally contacted and being served. It is not in play if it hits any object 7 meters above net including the antenna, or it hits the net or goes under the net, or the player commits a foul, or if the referee blows the whistle. Hitting with any other object not part of the game is also not accounted as a service.

Any action against the playing rules is a fault as stated under the volleyball regulations and rules. When a team commits a foul then the opposite teams wins a point, and in case of double fault, the referee checks who committed the foul first, then a point penalty is given to that team who committed the foul first. With team committing a foul, the opponent gets the advantage and wins a point.

Whenever a ball is touched with hand, or pushed while service, or played from a non playing area, then it is termed as false play of ball. Also when a player contacts the ball more than two times in a row, or player touches the net or antenna while play, or any illegal block, or players are out of position or the ball lands outside the court – that is termed as false play of ball. Even if the ball touches other part of body other than hand, it is also a false. Entering into opponent’s area and touching the ball together by any two team members is also a foul. Reaching out for ball under the net, and touching the net or ball in order to do so is also a foul play of ball.

The ball must completely Cross the net, or can touch the net to fall on opponent side, but while service ball should not touch the net as it is one of the many volleyball rules to be followed. Within the range of three hits the ball may be played out of the net, within that interval, players have the opportunity to return the ball to the opponent.

If the player touches the net in any way then it is a foul play, or any body part touching other than insignificant touch. If a player hits the net and the net then hits the player if opponent team then it is not considered as foul and touching the other side of the net or touching the opponent team’s area is a foul. A player may hit the ball very hard in such a way that it may hit the attacking team member, crossing the vertical path of the net. Any accidental actions are considered by the referee, and most of the times accidental actions are not considered as foul, and the game is played on ignoring the accidental foul.

Service is done behind the end line, and server should not touch the end line. Service not completed if the ball touches any player before crossing the net, ball lands outside volleyball court or the ball goes under the net. All the peoples must be in their respective position and can also take jump service only if the server is at the right position. Under volleyball rules and regulations, service may be of two types, underhand serve and overhand serve – two overhand services is the one that is effective, and underhand is the easiest service. Service not staying in the range of antenna or outside court is a foul; also ball falling into the hitter side after service is also foul service. Ball on the side line is considered out, and reserving is done.

A front row player can do the attack hit but a back row player can’t do so as mentioned in the main volleyball rules regulations. A back row player can’t do attack hit in front of the attack line until the ball is below the top of the net. So it’s easier always to take the hit from a front player.

Blocking is done by deviating the actual path of the ball before entering own side of the court resulting in the ball to fall inside server teams’ court. Blocking can be done by staying in the court without interfering with the other team’s space by staying close to the net which is an important point. It requires mainly the focus and observation of the blocker.

The rules within volleyball clearly state that there is a thirty second time out twice for each team to use; they may be called as interruptions. Each team uses this time for strategy and some even use it to break the other teams momentum.

There are some tricks used by teams during interruption which are used to delay the time. All the time wasting techniques which are used are in these time interval itself, which are being used as break by the teams legally.

Intended interruptions, if any player gets injured then referee may call for a break which is stated within volleyball regulations and rules.
Accidents may happen any time, at that time referee may call for a break.

Penalties such as, yellow card, red card, expulsion or disqualification. – If someone is shown a yellow card then it means a warning is given, while red card is a serious mistake for which warning is given along with point is awarded to opponent team. Under volleyball’s rules, when in expulsion, player is out for rest of the game. Any disqualification leads to the player going out of the area from where game is being played.

While the match is on, the group of officials involved are: first referee, second referee, scorekeeper, and line judges. Every member of that group needs to be alert every second of the game.

Duty of first referee is to take every responsibility of every decision to make in the game. From starting from foul decision, to stopping the game or re-starting a new set, every such decision is made by the first referee.

Duty of second referee is to get the list of the team members playing, watching the clock, keeping track records, supervising the substitution and many other off field decisions. It is the second referee who is stationed on the floor at one end of the net which is opposite to that of the first referee.

Scorekeeper records the score, keeps record of the rotation, and the side changes at any time. They also keep track of the time outs and the game progress. Most of the calculative procedures are done by the scorekeeper. According to rules of volleyball, the scorekeeper also signals when a team has acquired the 8th point in a deciding match, such that the sides can be interchanged.

Line judges looks for the side line error or any decision regarding sideline activities. Any fouls committed on the lines, foot fouls or the ball foul or any other line regarding foul are checked by the line judges. In case of same foul from both the sides, the side which commits the foul first gets the penalty, which is decided by the line judges.

By learning the above rules of volleyball positions one can be more aware of limits within the sport, and plan their game more better. Every team should have a strategy for opponent which should be discussed before entering the court. One must follow every move of the opponent to get a perfect block. Body movements and hand signal may also be used so that opponent may not know about the move to come.

Volleyball is a fun sport with simple rules and regulations to follow, and can be a great deal of fun for the players when teams are equally matched.

To start the play the coin toss is made to determine which team is going to serve the ball first. A player from the team who is serving the ball throws the ball in the air and hits it in such a manner the ball is grounded in the opponent team’s court and the team who had served then scores a point if the opponent team cannot hit the served ball. The opposing team cannot use more than three consecutive contacts with the ball to return the ball to the opponent team’s court from over the net. For the ball to be aimed towards the designated setter, these contacts thus consists of first of the pass. Secondly is the set, done by the setter which is usually a over hand pass in which we use our wrists to push finger tips at the ball. As a result the ball’s trajectory is such that it aims towards one of the designated attacker who can hit the ball. Third is the attacker who spikes so that the ball is returned from over the net. The team that possesses the ball is said to be on offense. For such a set up designating the volleyball positions to the player is very important.

The team who is defending tries to prevent the attacker from grounding the ball in his/her court. The players jump to reach the height of the ball just a bit above the net and hits the ball in such a manner so that they can ground the ball in the opponent team’s court. If the ball is hit round or through the block then the players who are playing in defense they attempt to control the ball with the help of a dig. After a successful dig, this defensive team transits to offense. The players have their individual designated volleyball positions.

The rally continues this way, back and forth till any one of the team is able to ground the ball on the other team’s court or unless any fault is detected.

Some of the common faults are as follows:

Causing the ball to land on the ground outside opponent’s court

Catching the ball and throwing it

Two consecutive hits or any kind of contact with the ball is made by a same player which is generally termed as double hit.

Four consecutive contacts is made with the ball by a same teams

Touching the net during the rally which is termed as net foul

While serving the foot crosses the boundary line which is termed as foot foul

Such positions in volleyball were added to the game in 1999 to improvise the rally and digging skills and make the game more exciting.

The libero is not regulated by the rules of rotation and he remains in the game all the time. He / she takes the volleyball positions of the middle blocker when they rotate to the back row and they cannot again rotate back to the front row. The person is chosen as a libero in the very beginning of the match or the tournament and no one can replace the libero for the entire match or tournament once chosen unless the libero is injured. The person is totally In charge of the offense. The setter decides when and who should get the ball. It is a very important position in this game. No matter how well skilled are the hitters but if there is not any good setter who can deliver good ball to hit then the team’s chances to lose will be maximum and they will have not have a good offense.

What does the setter do during the play?

This volleyball position holder should make sure that before the serve all his teammates have properly lined up and there is no overlapping

In front and back rows the setter should play in defense from the right side.

The opponent team’s outsider hitter should be blocked by the setter

Advanced Skills:

The opposite hitter plays from the right side in the front and back rows. When the setter is unavailable, the opposite hitter does the setter’s job of setting due to his location in the court.

What does the Opposite do during the play?

Before the serve, the opposite calls out for the opponent hitters.

Formation Positions:

4-2 Positions

This type of offense includes 4 attackers and 2 setters. To avoid confusion on the ground, less experienced team use this offense. The two setters take the volley ball positions in front and back rows respectively and which are just opposite tom each other. This arrangement helps the two attackers to attack from the front row. The setter then dumps the ball. 4-2 formations are the simplest and the team using it thus sets a basic set for the opponent team. As it is the simplest the beginners mainly use this formations and later on after gaining some experience they can easily take up any of the higher formations.Apart from this the negative aspect of this formation is there are some limitations that it imposes on our offense. As the setter is generally the team leader some think that two setter takes away from the team.

5-1 Positions

This formation includes the use of 1 setter and 5 attackers in the volleyball positions. Here the secondary setter is replaced by an opposite hitter and the hitter always plays opposite the setter in the ground. In this formation the setter dumps the ball in half the rotations and then the three front row attackers sets the ball on for the rest three rotations. Depending on whether the setter is in front row or back row, the setter can set any possible set. In this formation, one setter is made the team leader. And as there is only one setter it is quite suitable, as the setting is not changed any further and it avoids confusion. One setter sets differently the balls and it does not match with the setting of some other setter and creates a different feel for the attackers who are who are particularly use to one setter. The negative aspect of this formation is that, to set the ball, the setter needs to transit from defense.

6-2 Positions

A 6-2 formation includes 6 attackers and 2 setters in the volleyball positions. In this formation, the setter in the back row is always allowed to set the ball. The front row setter is only made the hitter. This formation is useful when the setters are also very good attackers and their coach also wants to exploit that talent. But unfortunately this formation has the disadvantages of both the 4-2 and 5-1 formations. The setter lacks the leadership quality as he has to transit from the defense all the time.

The person in the back right corner of the court serves the ball. We can rotate the players each time so that every time there is a new player serving the ball.

If we rotate the players out, we should rotate them clockwise. On the right side, the player closest to the net rotates out thus allowing many players to play.

A good service game is not possible if only one player is allowed to serve. Rotation is a very important in how to play volleyball

Step 2:

We should always serve the ball from behind the line which is at the back of the court otherwise if we serve it from front of the line we will not score any point. This fault is called foot fault. This is one of the errors made in such games and we should be careful about it. If the ball after the serve touches the net it will be another error. The serve is said to be good if the ball lands on the ground in the opponent team’s court. This scores a point for the serving team. This is a vital point in how to play volleyball.

The ball is considered to be good if the ball is grounded on the line.

The ball is served by the back row right side corner player in the team

Step 3:

If the person is in the receiving team, we have to return the ball and the rally begins! We have to bump, set the target and spike. This is the typical game strategy but its good till it crosses three consecutive hits.

The ball should not come to rest and for that we can hit the ball with any part of our body.

The ball cannot go out of the line, but the players can go over the line. We may run to retrieve the ball successfully so that is does not touch the ground, when a player hits it from out of the boundaries. This small points matters in how to play volleyball smartly and wisely.

Step 4:

Basic Rules: Until a fault occurs we need to hit the ball back and forth to continue the rally because of any one of the following:

The ball is grounded.

If the ball hits the ground in the side of the serving teams, then the opponent team will get an opportunity to serve.

If the ball is grounded by the serving team in the opponent team’s court, then the serving team again gets an opportunity to serve the ball.

A point is rewarded to the team who prevents the ball from being grounded.

If a net foul occurs(if any player from one team touches the net) the opponent team scores a point

If someone’s foot goes under the net, the opponent teams receives a point.

Players can strike the ball only twice in a row

Without sending it over the net, the team can hit the ball 3 consecutive times.

These are some of the errors which one should not make. These are the volleyball basics one should remember while playing.

Step 5:

If are thinking of rotating, you should rotate now. These are good volleyball techniques.

It’s common for the rows to back up a bit if your team has the ball. This is the best time to get ready for an attack. Move forward if you don’t have the ball.

Step 6:

You should continue playing until the threshold is reached. How many points we will allow for each game can be decided by you. When a team earns 15 points you can start a new game. This is very important in how to play volleyball.

Yourfeet should be placed in such a way that they are wider than your shoulders. Your knees should be bent and the whole body weight should be concentrated on your toes as you bent forward. Your arms should be free and it is in front of you. These are some of the basic body postures involved in volleyball techniques that are followed for playing a good game.

Step 2:

Practicing your serve well: In volleyball basics, serving the ball from anywhere behind the serve line and gets your ball over the net in the opponent player’s court and the rally is started. A serve immediately helps in scoring a point and is known as “Ace”.

Overhanded serve: for experienced players, they can try this type of serve:

Toss the ball.

Raise your hand which is dominant in the air, bend the elbow to bring it closer to your shoulder.

Then straighten your elbow to strike the ball with the outside part of your hand

Underhand serve: For less experienced players, they can use this type of serve:

In front of you, hold the ball out in your hand.

Then you make a fist and pull your dominant hand down by your side. The elbow should be bent slightly and you should keep your thumbs stretched across your fingers.

Using the front side of the fist strike the ball from the level of your waist.

The ball should hit the fist, against the index finger and the bent thumb.

How to play volleyball using a bump includes the following volleyball techniques:

Bring your arms together. They should be straight and away from your body. Knees should be bent.

A platform should be created by our forearms where the ball comes into contact.

We should not use fists or wrists to hit the ball. The contact should be made almost about 6 inches above the wrists.

We should not swing the arms and just let the ball make the contact.

Step 4:

“Setting”: we use the set when we want to get the ball into the air and make another player to strike it or bump it. Volleyball techniques to set the ball:

Bring your hands together

We have to put our hands together in such a way that our finger tips should touch

We have to form a triangle with our thumbs and index fingers by opening up our hands.

Bring your fingers apart and to a distance that would be perfect for the placement of the ball.

Step 5:

“Spiking” the ball: Spiking is an important aspect in how to play volleyball. This is also known as “attack” the volleyball basics to play the spike are as follows:

Lift your dominant hand to approach the ball. Hand is curved in shape of the ball with the elbow bent.

You should jump to reach as high as you can to gain maximum power to hit the ball with your palm so that It travels across the net and is grounded on the opponent team’s court.

Step 6:

“Blocking” is one of the vital volleyball basics one should master. There are mainly two types of blocking:

Offensive block:The blocker aims to keep the ball on the opponent’s court. In this case the ball can be sent straight to the opponent’s ground in his/her court if the timing is accurate to jump up, properly predicting the trajectory of the ball and then slamming it back.

Defensive block: This is called the soft block because it is used only to stop the power from behind the ball so that it is easier to send the ball back. The ball is made to hit the blockers palm, then it loses power by rolling over the fingertips and another player receives it.

Step 7:

“Dig”: This is one of the volleyball techniques that requires great reflexes and agility. The digger saves the ball just right before it is going to hit the ground.

In digging, players have their arms stretched out and they land on their chests. If this is done wrongly the digger might get injured so it should be done safely. To minimise the risk of injury experienced diggers should employ rolling technique.

Role of Volleyball Players:

– Outside hitter

An outside hitter or left side hitter is a player who takes the position of front left side of the volleyball court, hits and blocks the ball from that position. On offense, the outside hitter is the main go-to-hitter and one of the main passers who pass the ball. He swings to hit the ball that approaches from outside of the court. This is one of the volleyball positions techniques that enhances the play of the team and can be very beneficial

– Libero

Libero is a player who plays in defense from the back row and wears and opposite coloured jersey. He specialises in passing the ball received from pass, setting, digging, and free ball passing. He/ she is mainly a defensive specialist. This position was added to the game in 1999 to improvise the rally and digging skills and make the game more exciting. The libero should be master in volleyball basics.

The libero is not regulated by the rules of rotation and he remains in the game all the time. He / she takes the position of the middle blocker when they rotate to the back row and they cannot again rotate back to the front row. The person is chosen as a libero in the very beginning of the match or the tournament and no one can replace the libero for the entire match or tournament once chosen unless the libero is injured. If the libero is injured he/she is replaced by a player not present in the court. But then the new player should remain the libero for the rest of the match/tournament.

– Setter

Setter is the player whose main responsibility is to hit the ball in second contact and strike the ball to the teammate for further attack. Thus he should know how to play volleyball properly with all its basics and fundamentals. The person is totally In charge of the offense. The setter decides when and who should get the ball. It is a very important position in this game. No matter how well skilled are the hitters but if there is not any good setter who can deliver good ball to hit then the team’s chances to lose will be maximum and they will have not have a good offense.

Apart from these important players there are Substitute players like the Defensive Specialist whose functions are same as the libero.International rules says that there can be only 6 players and the game allows unlimited substitutions.

The game of volleyball has evolved much in the century since its invention, and it has come a long way to claim worldwide following with millions of professional volleyball players present in every corner of the earth. However, the game of volleyball had a much humbler beginning than what many people would care to believe today, and it has in fact travelled much from the days when it was played by a handful few in the YMCA gymnasium of Holyoke in Massachusetts, USA. In fact, this game has had phenomenal success in the past few decades, with numerous global events being held. These events including FIVB World Championships, the FIVB World League, the FIVB World Grand Prix, the FIVB World Cup, and the FIVB Grand Champions Cup, in addition to regular presence in the Olympic Games, which all serve as a testimony to its ever-growing popularity and success. Thus, it would be quite interesting for the lovers of this game to become knowledgeable about the history of volleyball, and the way it grew from being the pastime of few to a worldwide phenomenon with more than 220 nations affiliated to its global body, FIVB, making the largest such sporting federation on the planet.

Morgan invented the game of Volleyball in 1895

The Beginning History of Volleyball

The man responsible for the invention of the game of volleyball is William G. Morgan, who originally named this game as Mintonette, but then the name volleyball was intended to enter through the archives of history. Morgan was born in the State of New York, and carried out his undergraduate education at the Springfield College, which belonged to the YMCA or the Young Men’s Christian Association. It was here that Morgan had a chance to meet and interact with James Naismith, the same man who had invented the game of basketball in the year 1891. This interaction would go down as an extremely important event in the archives of volleyball history because a few years down the line Morgan would come up with the notion of inventing a game of his own, the modern day volleyball.

William G. Morgan moved to the Auburn YMCA in the state of Maine after graduating for the summer of 1895, but then decided to move on to the Holyoke YMCA in Massachusetts. At the Holyoke YMCA, Morgan was appointed the director of physical education, and it was there that he first had the opportunity and responsibility to establish, develop, and direct excessive programs for the male adults. Morgan became widely popular in his new role, and he began to attract large number of people to his class. However, he realized the need to develop a game, which will provide holistic workout while also providing enough variety in the program to retain the interest of the participants. He further realized that even though basketball was an excellent form of competitive recreational for the young people, he needed something a lot less physical and demanding for the older bunch to play and cheer. This was an important point in the history of volleyball when Morgan seriously started considering devising a new game for the people attending his classes.

Developmental Phase in History

Volleyball lessons at Holyoke gym – YMCA

Morgan developed the game of volleyball from the scratch because he was quite aware that no other game existed at that time which could serve as a template for his own design. Initially, Morgan thought of tennis, but the sheer number of accessories and other facilities required made this idea a stillborn. According to the volleyball history, Morgan had also thought of adopting the net, and set it at a height of 6 feet, 6 inches above the ground, or just above the head of an average man. He also tried a number of different balls for the new game, which included a basketball bladder, which was found to be too light and slow, and even the entire basketball that they found to be too big and bulky for their requirements. Finally, Morgan decided to get his ball made from the company, A.G. Spalding & Bros, which manufactured at their factory near Chicopee, which was in Massachusetts.

The ball that Morgan received performed in a satisfactory manner for his game, and it came with a rubber inner tube and leather covering on the outside. Moreover, the ball had a circumference of not less than 25 inches but not more than 27 inches, while the weight was between the range of 9 and 12 ounces to be accurate. Morgan next focused upon the need to develop the basic concept of this new game, and asked for help from his friends, John Lynch and Dr. Frank Wood, to help develop the first 10 rules. This was a monumental development in the history of volleyball because the game not only had a fixed ball but also a set of standard rules to guide and govern it.

The first showcasing of the newly developed game of volleyball positions at the conference of YMCA Directors of Physical Education held at new game stadium in Springfield was a grand success. The audience appreciated the demonstration made by two teams, comprising of five men each, as well as, some loyal fans, with J.J. Curran, the mayor of Holyoke captaining one of the sides, while the chief of the fire brigade of Holyoke, John Lynch captained the other, with both teams securing permanent mention in the annals of volleyball history. Morgan further explained the primary objective of this game, which consisted of passing the ball from one side of the net to the other while ensuring that it does not touch the ground on the way. He also explained that he had designed this game keeping in mind the gymnasia or exercise halls, but that players could enjoy it in the open air as well.

The game changed its name to Volley Ball from the earlier Mintonette upon suggestion from Professor Alfred T. Halstead, and then later from Volley Ball to the present form of Volleyball. However, the United States Volleyball Association has continued with its earlier acronym of USVBA.

Spread & Global History of Volleyball

In 1964, Volleyball was introduced to the Olympics, at Tokyo.

The game of volleyball attracted attention from all quarters, and rapidly became a countrywide sensation. It made its first appearance overseas during the East Asian Games, and an offensive style of passing the ball was introduced in Manila, Philippines in 1916. The offensive style, known as setting and spiking, consisting of passing the in high trajectory and then hitting it in a forceful manner revolutionized the way the game was played till then. However, despite the widening reach of this game, there were still no standard rules available, which was necessary for conducting any tournament plays.
The game has made rapid progress since then, with the first two-man beach volleyball game being played within a couple of years of setting up the national association, and the first two-man beach volleyball tournament and the initial volleyball world championship taking place in the following decade. The Beach Volleyball game first started in Hawaii in the year 1915, when Canoe Club and the Outrigger Beach association decided to set up a volleyball court on the Waikiki Beach. Moreover, the first beach volleyball association made its appearance in California in the year 1965, while the association of professional players, the American Volleyball Professionals or AVP was founded in 1983.
